Stay on BigCommerce
Often right when the store sells and the real problem is the design, the settings or the way changes get made. BigCommerce hosts the storefront, so there is no server for you to look after, and it says its servers are PCI compliant unless you customise the checkout. The trade-off is that you work within the theme, scripts and settings the platform allows.
Move to another platform
Worth considering when you want full control of the code and hosting, or a feature that neither the platform nor its apps offer. Your products, customers and orders export as CSV files, though customer passwords cannot be exported. See WooCommerce, Shopify and website migration.

BigCommerce questions, answered
Can I change my store’s design without code?
Partly. Page Builder changes colours, fonts, text sizes and how many products show, and lets you drag in text, images, banners, carousels and custom HTML blocks. You can save without publishing. Deeper changes mean editing the theme’s Handlebars templates, styles and scripts, which BigCommerce says takes web development knowledge, and its support team does not make code or design changes. The in-browser file editor works only on a copy of a theme and cannot edit JavaScript files, so bigger jobs use the Stencil CLI on a downloaded copy.
Can I export my products, customers and orders?
Yes. Products export as a CSV file from Products, Export, and customers and orders have their own exports. Redirects export as CSV from Settings, 301 Redirects. Customer passwords cannot be exported. Product images and downloadable files are kept in WebDAV and copied separately, and in the modern import and export, bulk pricing is not part of the product CSV.
Will my old addresses keep working if I change or move them?
Only if redirects are set up. Settings, 301 Redirects lets you add manual redirects to a new address, or dynamic ones tied to a product, brand, category, page or blog post, and both can be imported by CSV. BigCommerce also creates a redirect when a product, category or page name or address changes, unless you switch that off. Wildcard redirects cannot be created natively, and redirects are not available on trial stores. After a move off BigCommerce, the old addresses need redirecting on the new site. Can I move into BigCommerce from another platform?
Usually, yes. Products and customers go in through CSV files: a new product file needs Product Name and Category columns, and each customer needs an email address, first name and last name. Order history cannot be imported by CSV, only through BigCommerce’s API, so we plan that part separately.
How far can I customise the checkout?
BigCommerce’s default is Optimized One-Page Checkout. In the control panel you choose the checkout type and how guests and existing customers check out, and Page Builder can change the logo, fonts and colours. Developers can restyle it further through the theme’s SCSS file. A fully custom checkout built with the Checkout SDK is possible, but BigCommerce warns that it may affect PCI-DSS compliance and no longer receives automatic updates such as new features, bug fixes and security updates.
Can BigCommerce be used headless?
Yes. BigCommerce provides APIs and SDKs for headless storefronts, and Catalyst, its framework built on Next.js and React. With Catalyst you are responsible for hosting the storefront code, there is no theme marketplace, and BigCommerce notes that not all App Marketplace apps are supported. A headless build is a larger project than a theme-based store. Tell us what you are trying to achieve and we will say honestly whether it is work we would take on or whether a normal theme fits better.
