PrestaShop and OpenCart versions
These facts come from each project’s own announcements and documentation.
PrestaShop
PrestaShop 1.6 maintenance ended on 30 June 2019. PrestaShop said version 1.7 would stop being maintained once 9.0 shipped, and 9.0 was published on 10 June 2025. Version 8.2 is in extended support, with critical and security fixes only, until 10.0 is released. Their upgrade tool needs PrestaShop 1.7 or newer, so a 1.6 store has to go to 1.7 first.
OpenCart
OpenCart 3.x is still receiving releases, with 3.0.5.1 published in August 2026, and 4.1 is the current line. Moving from 3 to 4 is not a quick update: OpenCart’s developers say the database structure changed and there is no migration path for 3.x extensions, themes or modifications, so plan it as a rebuild and data move.

PrestaShop and OpenCart questions, answered
Can I upgrade my PrestaShop store?
Often, yes, using PrestaShop’s own Update Assistant. It has limits: third-party modules may be deactivated, the versions you can reach depend on your server’s PHP version, regenerating email templates can overwrite customised ones, and a backup is strongly recommended.
Can I take my products and customers with me?
PrestaShop lets you export lists as CSV files and import products, categories, customers and more. Orders can be exported but not imported back. OpenCart’s documented backup tool produces database files rather than spreadsheets, so we check what can be exported before promising a move.
Is my OpenCart 3 store at risk?
OpenCart 3.x is still being released, so it is not abandoned. Whether it is right for you depends on your extensions, your host and how much you want to change. We will tell you honestly after a review.
Should I move to WooCommerce or Shopify?
If the store has outgrown its modules or is costly to maintain, it is worth considering. See WooCommerce, Shopify and website migration.
