Squarespace Design, Fixes and Moves
Squarespace gives you good-looking templates and not much room to move. We help Surrey and BC businesses get more out of the Squarespace site they have, and plan a clean move for those who want to leave.
How we help with Squarespace websites
Whether you stay or go, we start by finding out what version and plan you are on.
Design changes and fixes
Layouts, pages, forms and the details that were never finished, within what your Squarespace version allows.
Search settings
Page titles, descriptions and addresses set up properly.
Version check
We find out whether you are on version 7.0 or 7.1, because it decides what is possible.
Domain and email
Finding out where your domain lives and where its email is, so a change does not take either offline.
Store and products
Product tidy-ups, or moving products to WooCommerce or Shopify.
Moving off Squarespace
Rebuilding your site elsewhere, with redirects from your old addresses.
Stay on Squarespace, or move off it?
Many Squarespace sites are fine as they are. Some are not.
Stay on Squarespace
A good choice for a simple, well-designed site that you can update yourself. We can improve it and fix what is broken. Custom code is possible, though Squarespace’s support does not troubleshoot it.
Move off Squarespace
Worth considering when you want features Squarespace does not offer or more control over how the site is built. Squarespace exports only part of a site, so a move means rebuilding the design and carrying across what exports. See website migration.
We will tell you honestly which makes sense for you.
Signs it may be time to look at your Squarespace site
- You are on an older version 7.0 template
- You need a feature the templates do not allow
- You cannot get your content out
- The store has outgrown it
- You want more control over the code
- The person who built it is no longer around
How we move a site off Squarespace
- 01
Review
We go through your pages, blog, store and domain, and decide what to keep.
- 02
Export and check
We export what Squarespace allows and see exactly what is included and what is missing.
- 03
Rebuild and test
We build the new site on a private copy and test it on phones and computers.
- 04
Switch and redirect
We point your domain at the new site and set up redirects from the old addresses.
Squarespace questions, answered
What does Squarespace export?
One file in WordPress format, from Settings, Advanced, Import and export. It includes layout pages, one blog page with its comments, and text and image blocks. It leaves out store pages, product, audio and video blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS, and only one blog exports. The design has to be rebuilt.
Can I take my store products with me?
Products export separately to a CSV file, up to 10,000 of them, for physical and service products. The file leaves out product and variant images, image alt text and customer reviews, so those are carried across separately.
What happens to my images if I cancel?
The export refers to your images rather than containing them. With a self-hosted WordPress site the links can break after you cancel, so the images should be downloaded first. We do this as part of a move.
How do I tell whether I am on version 7.0 or 7.1?
Open the Pages panel and look at the label at the bottom. Version 7.1 says so, and version 7.0 shows the template name. Moving from 7.0 to 7.1 is permanent, and it drops album pages and the Developer Platform changes.
Can I keep my domain if I leave?
Yes. You can transfer it away, which needs the domain to be unlocked, an authorization code emailed to you, and up to 15 days, or you can keep it where it is and point its DNS at the new site. A 60-day lock follows registration, a contact change or a transfer in.
Can Squarespace redirect my old addresses?
Its URL mappings do 301 and 302 redirects, but they cannot redirect the homepage or image and file addresses, and a page can only be redirected once it is deleted or disabled. After a move, the redirects need to be set up on the new host. See website migration.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the platform, the size of the site and what needs doing. Ask for a free quote and we’ll explain the options in plain language.
